What is
Home Automation?
| People often think of Home Automation as perking
coffee while showering or automatically turning off the lights when the
last person leaves the room. It is that, but it's a lot more too. | |
An automated home works for you to make life more comfortable and
convenient. You program it once and it never has to be told again that
starting the VCR means that at the same
time, the drapes should be closed, the lights dimmed and the temperature
adjusted to your comfort level. Or that arming the alarm
system should set the lighting to go on after dark and shut down
appliances that were inadvertently left on. No more wondering whether you
turned off the oven.
Besides
convenience, Home Automation is a major energy saving device and
friendly to the environment. It will control heating,
cooling and lighting of the house according
to where people are and what they are doing at any time of the day.
Home
Automation can save you money in other ways as well. A single VCR can
serve television sets in different rooms or a single stereo
system can send different programs to each room in the house. This
can save you dollars on purchasing and upgrading appliances.
It
provides both convenience and energy savings by automatically shutting or
opening your drapes or shades and
adjusting the tilt of the blinds according to the position of the sun. And
it enables you to remotely activate the climate
controls in your vacation home while you are still on route,
so that you arrive to enjoy a comfortable temperature with the house
already well lit.

Security
is a major benefit too. With Home Automation, you can see who's at the
front door or in the yard or check up on the sleeping baby from the TV in
the kitchen or while you are working at your computer.
For
a person with a disability, Home Automation is an absolute boon and can improve
the quality of life dramatically. Actions which would require help can
be done unaided by a disabled person using a remote control or even by
voice command.
An
automated home permits seniors
to continue to live alone and retain their independence. It
postpones the time they have to move to a retirement home.
Home
Automation integrates all the systems in
your house:
home theatre, audio, climate control, motorized drapes, telephones,
lighting and security. There is no limit to what home automation can do
for.
